The Dark Side of SM Algorithms

SM algorithms prioritize content that matches interest, emotion, and fear to sustain scrolling. Useful but with many harmful side effects.
Echo chambers & polarization: Favoring posts that reinforce beliefs and eliminate opposing views create bubbles. Deepening social and political divisions.
Dependence & MH: Engagement optimization (likes, shares, views) encourages compulsive use. Comparison cycles lower self-esteem, increasing anxiety and depression.
Amplification of misinformation: Prioritizing sensational posts spreads false information faster than facts.
Loss of authenticity: The pressure to post friendly content distorts reality, undermining genuine connections.
SM is powerful when used intentionally, but understanding its impact is the first step to regaining control.
