So I had this weird thing happen where my phone kept showing as private when I called people, and nobody was picking up. Turns out it wasn't just me being paranoid. Spent hours digging through settings before I figured out what was going on.
If this is happening to you, the fix usually depends on your phone. On Android, you need to go into your Phone app settings and look for Caller ID options under Supplementary services or Additional settings. Different brands like Samsung or Xiaomi hide it in slightly different spots, but you're basically telling your network to show your number instead of private. Just tap Show number and wait for the network confirmation.
For iPhone users, it's actually easier now. Go to Settings, then Apps, find Phone, and toggle on Show My Caller ID. If you have multiple lines like an eSIM and physical SIM, you gotta do it for each one separately.
Here's the thing though - sometimes your phone settings look fine but calls still show as private anyway. That's when you need to use those carrier codes directly. Dial *31# to make your number visible on all calls, or if that doesn't work, try #31# depending on your network. There's also *#31# to check your current caller ID status. I know these codes seem random but they talk straight to your carrier network, which is why they sometimes work when the phone settings don't.
If nothing's working, try resetting your network settings completely. On Android go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings. On iPhone it's Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset Network Settings. Your phone will restart and reconnect fresh.
One more thing - if you're using privacy apps like Truecaller or Hiya, those might be blocking your caller ID too. And if your SIM card is super old, it might not play well with newer networks. Sometimes just swapping to an eSIM fixes it. The #31# code thing usually works, but if your carrier's being stubborn, these other options are worth trying.
