Just realized I need to change contact details for my R350 grant and honestly, the process is more complicated than I thought. Turns out there are different procedures depending on which grant you're getting, and if you mess up the timing, you'll miss a payment cycle.

So here's the thing: if you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you can't do this online. You literally have to go to a SASSA office in person, bring your original ID, proof of your new bank account (a bank statement from the last three months works), and fill out their forms. The bank then takes up to 21 days to verify everything. And get this—if you submit after the 15th of the month, you won't see the change until the next payment cycle. That caught me off guard.

But if you're on the SRD grant, it's actually way easier. You can do it all online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS to your current number, and you can update your banking details and phone number right there. Just make sure the account is in your name only—they won't pay into joint or third-party accounts.

One heads up though: there are fake websites out there pretending to be SASSA. Don't fall for it. Stick to the official portal to protect your info. And if the online process gives you trouble, just call their helpline at 0800 60 10 or visit an office. Honestly, that might be safer anyway if you're worried about getting it wrong.
