Just dealt with updating my SASSA details and realized most people don't know there's actually two different processes depending on which grant you're on. If you're getting the SRD R350, changing your account number is super straightforward—you do it all online through the official portal, they send you an SMS link, and you're done in minutes. Way easier than I expected.

But here's the thing: if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), it's a whole different story. You literally cannot change your account number online, no matter what. You have to go to a SASSA office in person, fill out forms, bring your ID and bank statement (not older than 3 months), and wait up to 21 days for the bank to verify everything. And this is important—the account has to be in your name only. No joint accounts, no third-party stuff.

One trick I learned: if you want the new account number to work for next month's payment, you need to submit the request before the 15th. Miss that deadline and you're stuck with the old account for another cycle, which is frustrating.

Also, don't fall for fake websites claiming to help you change your details. Stick to the official SASSA portal or call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11. Honestly, for anything complicated, just go to the office—it takes time but it's the safest way to make sure your account number actually gets updated properly.
