What an intense match it was between Monterrey and Xelajú MC in Guatemala. The Rayados arrived as favorites but ended up drawing 1-1 at the Mario Camposeco, thanks to a goal from Tecatito Corona that prevented them from losing.

The truth is that Xelajú MC did not let themselves be intimidated. Roberto Hernández set up a compact team with his 4-4-2 and was close to surprising the locals. The curious thing was seeing Antonio López on the Guatemalan team’s roster, that Mexican who was developed in the América youth system but decided to naturalize to play for Guatemala.

Monterrey vs Xelajú MC was a match where Doménec Torrent tested his 4-3-3 formation with some youth players mixed in. The 1-1 draw was not what the Tapatíos expected, but at least they didn’t leave empty-handed in this first round of the Concacaf Champions Cup. All of this took place on February 4th, so it’s now history, but it certainly raised questions about how the tournament is shaping up.
