Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly change their banking details with SASSA, especially with the December payments coming up. Let me break this down because it's actually different depending on which grant you're getting.

If you're on permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you can't do this online unfortunately. You have to go physically to your nearest SASSA office, fill out the Payment Method Change Form, and bring your ID plus proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works). They'll verify everything and it takes up to 21 working days to process. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next month, otherwise you wait another cycle.

But if you're getting the SRD R350 relief grant, it's way easier - everything is online through their official portal. You enter your ID, they send you an SMS link, you verify and add your new banking details. Just make sure the account is actually in your name, SASSA won't pay into joint or third-party accounts.

Phone number updates work similarly - permanent grants need an office visit or call to 0800 60 10 11, while SRD can be changed through their contact portal online with an OTP verification. Honestly, if you're having trouble with the online system, just call the helpline or visit in person. Way less headache than dealing with payment issues later.
