Oh my God—UK police have just busted a cryptocurrency scam gang, and all ten people have been indicted. The most outrageous part is that they posed as police officers to call victims and trick them into saying the wallet’s seed phrase. Once it was said, the money was gone. Someone was taken for a whopping £300,000—just thinking about it is terrifying.
At the end of April, police carried out synchronized raids in Kent, Essex, and London, arresting the group. Three suspects have already been remanded, and the other seven were released on bail pending trial, with another court hearing scheduled for next month. Honestly, social-engineering scams like this are even more vicious than technical hacking, because they directly target human weaknesses.
But it seems cryptocurrency scam cases in the UK are becoming more and more common. Last year, someone in Oxford was forced by robbers to transfer $1.5 million in crypto assets. This year, at the start of the year, three teenagers disguised themselves as delivery workers and stole £3.1 million from London. Police remind everyone: never tell anyone your seed phrase—no matter who they claim to be, including someone claiming to be a police officer—because real police would never ask for it. Have you ever received a similar scam call?
