Just got asked about updating SASSA details again, so figured I'd share what I know. If you're getting permanent grants like old age or disability, you pretty much have to go to the office in person—no way around it. Bring your ID (original and copy), proof of your new bank account (bank statement from the last three months works), and they'll sort you out with the Payment Method Change Form. The banking update takes about 21 working days to process, so if you want it effective next month, submit before the 15th. Otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
Now, the SRD R370 grant is different—that's all online, which is actually way easier. You log into the SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you an SMS link. Click it, update your banking details there, and you're done. Just make sure the account is in your name, not joint or someone else's. Same thing applies everywhere—SASSA won't pay into accounts that aren't solely yours.
Phone number changes are similar depending on which grant you get. For SRD, there's an online contact portal where you enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, and they send you an OTP to verify. For permanent grants, honestly just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 or visit the office. People keep getting scammed by fake websites, so stick to the official SASSA portal if you're doing anything online. If the portal gives you trouble, the helpline or in-person visit is your safest bet, even if it means waiting a bit. The 350 banking update process sounds complicated but it's really just making sure everything's verified and in your name.
