Just had to sort out updating my bank details for the R350 grant and honestly, the process is quite different depending on which type of grant you're on. If you're getting the SRD, it's actually pretty straightforward—everything's done online through the official portal, which is actually a good thing because it's secure and you can do it from home. You just need your ID number and application ID, then they send you an SMS link to verify. Takes a few days to process once you submit.

But here's the thing—if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't do this online at all. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your original ID, proof of the new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works), and fill out their payment method change form. They'll verify everything on the spot, but the actual update can take up to 21 working days because it goes back and forth with the bank.

One important thing I learned: make sure the bank account is in YOUR name only. SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything under someone else's name, which makes sense for security but it's worth knowing upfront. Also, if you're changing your phone number for the SRD grant, do that through their contact portal and they'll send you an OTP to confirm. Just be careful to use the official SASSA website—there are dodgy sites out there pretending to be SASSA.

If you miss the deadline to update your details (usually needs to be before the 15th of the month), you'll have to wait another cycle. So if you're planning to update your bank details for your R350 or other grants, probably best to get it done early in the month. The helpline is 0800 60 10 11 if you get stuck or just want to double-check before you go in.
