Got tired of people not picking up your calls because your number shows as private? Yeah, I've been there. Turns out this happens more often than you'd think, and usually it's not some mysterious glitch. Most of the time you can actually fix it yourself.
I remember the first time my number started showing as private to everyone I called. I wasn't doing anything different, but suddenly friends were like "why do you always call from a private number?" Checked my phone settings and everything looked normal. Caller ID was supposedly on. Still nothing. Took me a while to realize the issue wasn't just my phone doing something weird - it was the whole system between me and my carrier not communicating right.
So if you're trying to figure out how to remove your phone from showing private, here's what actually works.
For Android users, most of this comes down to your carrier settings. Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, Realme - they all handle it slightly differently, but the basic idea is the same. You're basically telling your network "hey, show my number when I call."
If you're on Android 16, go into your Phone app, hit the three dots at the top, find Settings or Call Settings. Look for Calling accounts or Supplementary services. Pick your active SIM if you've got more than one, then dig into Additional settings and find Caller ID. Select "Show number" or "Network default" and wait for your network to confirm the change. That's usually it.
Realme phones do it slightly different. Open Phone app, tap the menu, go to Settings, then Calling accounts. Pick which SIM you want to change - like MTN or Airtel. Tap Additional settings, select Caller ID, choose Show number, and confirm. Different brands put these options in different spots, so you might need to poke around a bit depending on your phone.
One thing that catches people is if you've got Advanced Protection turned on under Settings > Security and privacy. That feature can lock down your caller ID settings. If the Caller ID option is greyed out, that's probably why. Turn off Advanced Protection and you should be good.
If changing the setting doesn't stick, try resetting your Phone app. Go to Settings, find Apps, look for the Phone app, tap into Storage and cache, then Clear storage and Clear cache. Restart your phone and let it reconnect to the network. This fixes a lot of sync issues between your phone and your carrier.
For iPhone users, Apple moved things around in iOS 26. All your phone settings are now in the Apps section instead of scattered everywhere. To remove private number display, open Settings, scroll to Apps, select Phone, then tap Show My Caller ID and flip the switch on. Pretty straightforward.
If you've got multiple lines - like an eSIM and a physical SIM - you need to turn on Show My Caller ID for each one separately. Otherwise your number might still show as private on one of them.
Apple also linked caller ID more closely to Apple Business Connect now, so if you can't see the Show My Caller ID option at all, your carrier might be controlling it from their end. That happens with some networks.
Older iPhones like the 14 and 15 sometimes get display glitches after updating to iOS 26. If that's happening, close the Phone app and restart your iPhone. Check Settings > General > About to see if there's a carrier settings update waiting. Also look in Settings > General > VPN and Device Management to make sure a work or school profile isn't blocking your caller ID.
Now, here's the annoying part: sometimes you do all this and your number still shows as private to the people you call. When that happens, the problem is sitting between your phone and your carrier's network, not on your device.
You can try using USSD codes to talk directly to your carrier. Dial *31# to make your number visible on all calls. On some networks like MTN in Nigeria, you dial #31# to actually hide your number and make calls show as private. Dial *#31# to check if your caller ID is restricted or allowed. If you want to hide your number for just one call, dial #31# followed by the number, like #31#08031234567.
If the codes don't work, do a full network reset. On Android 16, go Settings > System > Reset options, tap Reset mobile network settings, and confirm. This also clears your saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth connections, so be aware of that.
On iOS 26, go Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone, tap Reset, then Reset Network Settings. Your phone restarts and reconnects to the carrier.
There are other things that can mess this up too. Privacy apps like Truecaller, Hiya, or RoboKiller might be hiding your number if they have deep system access. Sometimes caller ID fails when you're switching between newer and older network types. If your SIM is older than five years, it might not work great with 5G Standalone networks - replacing it or switching to eSIM sometimes helps. When you're roaming internationally, caller ID can get lost as the signal bounces through different networks.
Basically, if your phone shows caller ID is on but people still see private calls from you, check your phone settings first, then try the carrier codes, then do a network reset if nothing else works. Usually one of these fixes it and you're back to having your number show up normally.
