Ever had your phone calls showing as Private without knowing why? Yeah, that happened to me too, and it was frustrating until I figured out what was going on.
I remember calling a friend and they asked why I kept using a private number. I had no idea what they meant. My caller ID settings looked normal, but every single call went out as Private. I tried restarting, toggling settings, nothing worked. Turns out, it wasn't just one thing—could be your phone settings, your carrier, your SIM card, or even a feature you didn't know existed.
If you're dealing with this, here's how to actually remove private number from your calls.
**On Android (including Android 16)**
Most Android phones handle caller ID through your carrier's network settings. Different manufacturers put these options in different spots, but the goal is the same: tell your network to show your number.
On standard Android 16 phones, open the Phone app, tap the three dots, go to Settings, then look for Calling accounts or Supplementary services. Pick your SIM if you've got multiple, then find Additional settings and Caller ID. Select Show number and wait for the network confirmation.
If you're on Realme, it's similar: Phone app → Settings → Calling accounts → pick your SIM (MTN, Airtel, whatever) → Additional settings → Caller ID → Show number.
One thing to watch: if Caller ID is greyed out, check if Advanced Protection is enabled under Settings > Security and privacy. That feature can lock down your call data.
If changing the setting doesn't stick, try resetting the Phone app itself. Go to Settings → Apps → Phone → Storage and cache → Clear storage and Clear cache. Then restart. This forces your phone to reconnect with your carrier fresh.
**On iPhone (iOS 26)**
Apple moved phone settings around in iOS 26. Now everything's under the Apps section. To remove private number on iPhone, open Settings → Apps → Phone → Show My Caller ID and toggle it on (should show green).
If you've got multiple lines (eSIM and physical SIM), you need to enable it for each line separately so your number shows on all calls.
One catch: if you don't see the Show My Caller ID option at all, your carrier might be controlling it at the account level. Also check Settings → General → VPN and Device Management to see if a work or school profile is blocking it.
Older iPhones like the 14 and 15 sometimes have display glitches after updating to iOS 26. Try closing the Phone app and restarting, then check Settings → General → About for a carrier settings update.
**Still showing as Private?**
If your settings say caller ID is on but people still see Private calls, the problem is between your phone and your carrier's network.
You can use USSD codes to talk directly to your carrier: dial *31# to make your number visible on all calls. On some Nigerian networks like MTN, #31# disables caller ID. Use *#31# to check if your caller ID is restricted or allowed. Or dial #31# followed by a specific number (like #31#08031234567) to hide it just for that one call.
If codes don't work, try a network reset. On Android 16, go Settings → System → Reset options → Reset mobile network settings. On iOS 26, go Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
A few other things that mess with caller ID: privacy apps like Truecaller or RoboKiller can hide your number if they have deep permissions. Switching between different network types can cause issues. Old SIM cards (5+ years) sometimes struggle with 5G Standalone—swapping to a new SIM or eSIM helps. And when you're roaming or calling internationally, the signal can get lost passing through different networks.
Most of the time, checking your phone settings, using carrier tools, and making sure your network profile is right will get your caller ID working again so people actually see your number when you call.
