Just realized a lot of people are confused about updating their SASSA details. Let me break down what you actually need to do because the process is different depending on which grant you're on.
If you're on the SRD R370 grant, you're lucky because everything is online through the official SASSA portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure SMS link, and you can update your banking details and cellphone number from your phone. Takes a few days to weeks for verification, but it's straightforward. Just make sure the bank account is in your name only—no joint accounts or third-party stuff. For the cellphone number change on SRD, you need your Application ID, enter your new number, get an OTP sent to verify it, and you're done. Pretty simple if the portal works.
Now, if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), this is where it gets annoying. You can't do any of this online. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office, fill out the Payment Method Change Form, and bring your original ID plus proof of your new bank account—basically a recent bank statement or official letter from the bank. They'll verify everything and send it to the bank, which can take up to 21 working days. Pro tip: if you want the change to go through next month, submit it before the 15th of the current month, or you'll have to wait another cycle.
For updating your cellphone number on permanent grants, you can try calling the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11, but honestly, most people end up going to the office anyway because verification gets complicated. Either way, keep your details current—missed payments are annoying when you're waiting for that money. And watch out for fake SASSA websites trying to scam you; always use the official links.
