Just noticed something weird in the bitcoin price today news cycle. BTC hit $81K last week, which looks bullish on the surface, but the on-chain data is telling a different story. Santiment's numbers show only 531K active wallets moving daily and just 203K new wallets being created. Both are scraping two-year lows. So we've got price climbing but participation tanking. That's the kind of move that usually doesn't stick around. Normally when bitcoin price rallies like this, you'd see retail piling in, more wallets spinning up, the whole network buzzing. Not happening. A smaller crowd is pushing this higher on thin volume. The 22% gain over five weeks looks solid until you realize there's no real foundation underneath it. If the big players start taking profits, there might not be enough fresh demand to absorb the selling pressure. That said, some analysts are pointing to Ali Martinez's weekly MACD crossover from April 13 as a potential game-changer. Similar setups have historically led to massive runs - 147% in late 2023, 75% in late 2024. The weekly chart is showing green momentum and BTC is testing the 83K level (the 200 SMA). A clean break above that could open doors toward 89K and beyond. The institutional money is definitely showing up though. ETF flows have been steady - $162.8M for the week, with a $630M single-day inflow at one point, and another $532M on May 4. That's real capital entering through the ETF channel even if on-chain activity stays depressed. Geopolitical tensions easing also helped, and miner profitability is back up to $37 per petahash per second, the best since January. So here's the reality check on bitcoin price today news: we could see a push toward $94K if ETF inflows keep flowing and we get a daily close above 83K. But if that resistance holds and we roll over, support at 77K could get tested pretty quickly. Most likely scenario is we chop sideways between 80-83K until the next catalyst hits. The technical setup looks interesting, but the weak on-chain activity keeps me from getting too bullish.
