Just realized Ford's commercial division might be one of the most underrated profit engines out there. Ford Pro pulled in over $66 billion in revenue last year with $6.8 billion in earnings before interest and taxes — margins more than triple what their traditional car business is doing. That's the kind of hidden gem investors often miss.
What caught my attention though is how a small tweak to their service model could make this business even more valuable. They've been rolling out something called Uptime Assist, which focuses on getting fleet vehicles back on the road faster. Sounds simple, but here's why it matters: when a commercial vehicle sits in a repair bay, the customer loses $500 to $1,000 per day. That's real money for businesses running fleets.
The numbers are pretty impressive so far. Ford Transit vans hit record volume in 2025, Super Duty pickups had their best year since 2004, and their software subscription business grew 30% — that's high-margin recurring revenue. But the uptime tweak is interesting because it directly addresses a pain point their customers face constantly.
Uptime Assist has only been around for about a year, and it's already cutting repair times by 10-15% on average. That might sound modest, but we're talking about half a day saved per repair cycle. When you're managing a fleet of dozens or hundreds of vehicles, that compounds quickly.
Management is pretty focused on this — their customer service VP emphasized that getting vehicles back on the road the same day is the priority. It's not flashy, but it's the kind of operational tweak that builds loyalty and makes the business harder to replace.
The bigger picture is that Ford Pro has fundamentally changed from what it used to be. Years ago, their commercial division was basically a dumping ground for low-margin vehicles. Now it's a profit machine with pricing power and customer stickiness. Every improvement like this one reinforces that shift.
If you're looking at automotive stocks, this is worth paying attention to. The commercial vehicle space doesn't get as much hype as consumer cars or EVs, but Ford Pro is showing you can build real value there with the right focus.
