Fitbit has experienced relative calm in recent years, but Google has revived the brand by launching the new Fitbit Air device—the company it acquired in 2021.

The device will be the company’s first screenless fitness band, a move that places it directly in competition with health-tracking devices such as Whoop.

Fitbit Air is Fitbit’s first major new product since the release of Fitbit Charge 6 in 2023, and it comes alongside a major update to the Fitbit app, which will gradually transition into the Google Health platform.

What are its features?

The device is based on a small, pebble-like design that can be easily attached to or removed from different bands, with full focus on health and fitness tracking away from the idea of a traditional screen.

Fitbit Air includes a set of advanced health sensors, including automatic tracking of physical activity, workouts, and sleep, along with around-the-clock heart rate monitoring, analysis of heart rate variability, and alerts for potential atrial fibrillation.

It also includes an SpO2 sensor to monitor oxygen saturation, a temperature sensor, and a three-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, while Google confirms that its sleep analysis algorithm is 15% more accurate than previous generations.

But the biggest bet is not limited to the device itself—it is also on integration with the new Google Health platform and the AI-powered health coach Gemini. This will analyze the user’s health data and deliver real-time recommendations related to sleep, workouts, fitness, and lifestyle management.

Users can also interact directly with the smart coach to get tips on improving sleep or preparing for workouts.

Device Types and Prices

Google has introduced three different types of bands, including the woven Performance Loop sports version, the silicone Active Band version, and the elegant Modern Elevated Band version, with a variety of colors.

The company also collaborated with Stephen Curry to launch a limited special edition in light brown with orange accents.

Google says the Fitbit Air battery lasts up to a full week on a single charge, and that power for a full day can be obtained in just 5 minutes of charging.

The device is compatible with Android and iOS, with prices starting at $99.99, while additional bands start at $34.99, and the Stephen Curry special edition is priced at $129.99...
