Just went through some interesting equity research and figured I'd share what caught my attention. There's been some solid movement in the energy and defense sectors lately, and a few names are worth keeping on your radar.
Starting with energy - Exxon Mobil has been quietly outperforming its peers over the past few months. What's driving this? Their Permian Basin and Guyana assets are no joke. We're talking about real production growth here, with upstream earnings literally doubling since 2019. The company's also pushing into lower-carbon tech, hydrogen facilities and all that. But here's the thing - crude prices are under pressure heading into 2026, which could weigh on those upstream numbers. Their newer ventures like lithium are still super early stage, so don't expect immediate contributions there.
Lockheed Martin is another one that's been turning heads. They're the biggest U.S. defense contractor by a mile, and the Pentagon keeps the orders flowing. International markets are eating up their products too. The defense budget tailwinds should help, but they're dealing with some program execution issues that could bite them. Labor shortage in aerospace is real too.
Honeywell's commercial aviation and building automation businesses are holding up well. The aerospace segment especially has been solid thanks to defense strength and growing air transport. Shareholders are getting rewarded with returns, which never hurts. The concern is their balance sheet got hit pretty hard from acquisitions, and industrial automation is struggling. Rising operating costs are also a headwind.
Then there's AMREP, a smaller play in real estate development. Land sales have been weak - that's historically their best margin driver. They've got solid cash and minimal debt, which is good, but earnings volatility is elevated. Their rental portfolio is expanding though, adding some recurring income to offset the cyclicality.
Overall, energy and defense are showing interesting dynamics right now. If you're looking at portfolio positioning, these sectors deserve some attention. Exxon Mobil especially worth monitoring given the energy market setup.
