Just came across something interesting about the Chicago business barometer that caught my eye. The index jumped to 57.7 in February, which was way higher than what economists were predicting. They were looking for it to settle around 52.5, so this beat expectations pretty significantly. What really stood out to me was the production side - that index spiked 9 points to levels we hadn't seen since late 2023. Employment also made a comeback, jumping 7.7 points and actually returning to expansion territory for the first time in months. New orders are looking stronger too, hitting their best level since early 2022. The only thing that nudged up was inflation readings, but nothing dramatic. Overall, this barometer is signaling some real momentum building in the Chicago business scene. Kind of interesting to see this kind of upside surprise after things had been pretty stagnant for a while.
