Been thinking a lot about where the real money is flowing in the artificial intelligence infrastructure space right now, and honestly it's pretty fascinating to watch unfold.
So here's what's happening. The hyperscalers - we're talking Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, Amazon - they've collectively dumped hundreds of billions into GPUs and data centers over the past few years. But here's the thing that most people aren't really discussing: the infrastructure they're building is hitting capacity constraints. The workloads are expanding way faster than they can actually build and equip new data centers.
Then there's the chip supply issue on top of that. Getting enough GPUs to meet demand is its own challenge. So what are these companies doing? They're turning to neoclouds. Companies like Cipher Mining, CoreWeave, and Iren are basically solving this problem by partnering with chip makers and setting up GPU clusters that the capacity-constrained players can rent access to.
The deals are starting to validate this model. AWS dropped a $5.5 billion multiyear deal with Cipher Mining back in November. Around the same time, Microsoft signed a $9.7 billion agreement with Iren. Then just recently, Nvidia invested $2 billion into CoreWeave, which is pretty telling about where the industry sees this going.
What really caught my attention is the pattern here. You've got AWS already using neoclouds as part of their infrastructure strategy. Nvidia is backing CoreWeave with real capital. Microsoft is committed to Iren. The artificial intelligence infrastructure play isn't just about the hyperscalers building their own data centers anymore - it's about this ecosystem of neocloud providers filling in the gaps.
I think there's a real case to be made that Iren could land another major partnership sooner rather than later. Whether that happens during some earnings call or not is almost beside the point. The bigger picture is that these neocloud companies are becoming essential infrastructure for artificial intelligence deployment.
Personally, I see this as a legitimate long-term theme to build exposure to. The artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout isn't slowing down, and the capacity constraints aren't going away. Companies that are solving that problem are probably going to see significant opportunities ahead. If you're looking at where to position yourself in this space, these neocloud providers are worth serious consideration.
