Just caught this—Hitachi Rail just landed a massive EUR 481.6 million contract for Turin's new automated metro line. That's pretty wild for a single project. The thing that got me is they're building this fully driverless system with zero human operators needed, everything from start to stop is automated.

So here's what's interesting: the trains are designed to carry 404 passengers each, and they're using this advanced CBTC signalling system (GoA4, the highest automation level available). Turin's getting 31 stations across 28 km total, with the first section opening by 2033. Plus, all the trains are being made in Italy, which is a nice touch for a European project.

Hitachi's also throwing in their HMAX digital system that monitors everything in real-time using AI and sensors. They've already deployed it on over 2,000 trains globally. The contract breaks down to EUR 388.5 million for the main section and EUR 93.1 million for an optional expansion.

It's one of those projects that shows how far metro tech has come—fully automated, energy-efficient, the whole package. Makes you wonder when other cities will start pushing for similar upgrades.
