Caught an interesting collaboration that's worth paying attention to. PPG just teamed up with IPG Photonics and Whirlpool to push laser curing technology into the mainstream for powder coatings. This is actually a pretty big deal if you follow the materials and manufacturing space.

So here's what's happening. They're using fiber laser technology to cure powder coatings with infrared light instead of traditional thermal methods. The chemistry part triggers crosslinking that converts powder into a protective finish, but way faster than conventional approaches. We're talking a fraction of the time, which means significant energy savings and higher throughput.

What caught my attention is the infrastructure they've already built out. PPG installed a full pilot line at their Strongsville facility with IPG's PhotoniCURE system, plus a lab setup at their Innovation Center near Pittsburgh. They're already running trials with Whirlpool on appliance components. This isn't just theoretical anymore.

The sustainability angle is interesting too. Lower heat input, less waste, and they're pushing formulations that use recycled PET and are PFAS-free. You're seeing this trend everywhere in manufacturing right now—companies getting serious about reducing emissions and waste. That's driving adoption of technologies like this.

PPG stock is up 3.5% over the past year, but honestly the bigger story here is whether laser curing becomes standard practice in the industry. If the Whirlpool trials work out and customer availability hits, this could reshape how powder coatings get processed. The timing aligns with how manufacturers are increasingly focused on sustainable practices, so momentum seems to be building. Worth monitoring if you're following industrial tech or materials innovation.
