Been looking into bond funds lately and honestly, picking the best bond index funds comes down to what you actually need. Individual bonds can get expensive and messy to manage, so mutual funds make way more sense for most people. The liquidity is better too.
So I came across three that keep popping up in the rankings and they're worth checking out. DWS Short Duration focuses on higher-rated fixed-income stuff with different maturity dates - returned about 5.5% over three years. Then there's BBH Limited Duration which goes for maximum total return with a mix of asset-backed securities and bonds. That one hit 6.3% over the same period. The third is Osterweis Strategic Income, which is interesting because it doesn't lock itself into specific duration targets. It just does rigorous analysis and adjusts accordingly. That fund's actually done the best of the three at 8.5% over three years, though the expense ratio is 0.83%.
What I like about going with diversified bond funds is you're spreading risk across different sectors instead of betting on one thing. Plus, if you're looking for steady returns without going all-in on risky stuff, these kinds of funds hit that sweet spot. When you're trying to find the best bond index funds for a balanced portfolio, diversification across sectors really does matter.
The thing that makes these stand out is they all have strong rankings and are expected to keep outperforming. If you're building something resilient, funds with exposure to multiple bond types across different markets seem like the smarter move than trying to piece together individual bonds yourself.
