Just realized I've been doing credit card applications all wrong. Turns out before you even formally apply, you can check if you're pre-approved for specific cards without tanking your credit score. It's basically a soft check that shows which cards you actually have a shot at getting.

So here's what I did - went to the card issuer's website and looked for their pre-approval page. Took like a minute to fill out a form with basic stuff: name, address, last four of your SSN. Some ask for income or what type of card you're looking for too. After that it shows you which cards you qualify for, sometimes with better offers than what's publicly listed.

The whole thing is pretty painless and doesn't hurt your credit at all. Beats just randomly applying and hoping for the best. Most of the big card companies have these tools now - Chase, American Express, Bank of America, Discover, Capital One, all have them. Worth checking before you actually submit an application if you want to know your odds first.
