Been watching the XRP situation pretty closely, and honestly it's getting complicated. A year ago we saw it hit $3.50, now it's sitting around $1.39. Most people blame the broader crypto market dip, but I think there's something deeper happening here that's worth paying attention to.
Ripple, the company behind XRP, just did a major pivot. They're basically going all-in on stablecoins now. Their whole website positioning changed to focus on stablecoin payments infrastructure. They dropped $200 million to acquire Rail, a stablecoin payments company, and launched RLUSD - their own dollar-backed stablecoin. They're pushing it hard into cross-border payments.
Here's where it gets interesting though. XRP was always supposed to be the bridge asset in Ripple's payment system. That was the entire bull case - adoption of Ripple's products would drive XRP demand. But now RLUSD is essentially doing the same job, except it's stable and regulated. For banks and institutions, it's actually a better option. It's like Ripple created a direct competitor to its own token.
The problem is how institutional adoption actually works in this space. When banks use XRP for cross-border payments, they're buying and selling almost instantly. Every buy matches with an immediate sell. There's no real holding period, so no sustained demand pressure. Now layer in RLUSD, which offers stability without the volatility. From an institution's perspective, why would you choose XRP when you could use something that won't swing 30% in a week?
Looking ahead to 2026, I actually think Ripple the company will do fine. Their payment infrastructure is solid, RLUSD is gaining real traction, and the regulatory environment just got clearer. But here's the kicker - that success probably won't help XRP holders much. The token could easily stay stuck below $1.50 or even drift lower. And the irony is it won't be because Ripple failed. It'll be because they succeeded with stablecoins instead of XRP.
So if you're thinking about jumping into this cryptocurrency on the dip, worth considering that this might not be a temporary pullback. Could be the new equilibrium. The story changed when Ripple changed their strategy.
