Just fell down a rabbit hole looking at the most expensive bags ever made and honestly, some of these price tags are absolutely insane.
So apparently Elizabeth Taylor had this gold evening clutch covered in diamonds that sold for $218,500 at auction. Like, it's gorgeous, but that's more than a house down payment for a bag you can barely fit anything in.
Then there's the Chanel Diamond Forever - Karl Lagerfeld designed this one with real alligator leather and white gold, and get this, 334 diamonds on the clasp alone. The auction price? $261,000. It's beautiful, no question, but at what point does a bag stop being functional?
Chanel also has this Elongated Classic Flap Clutch from 1989 that's listed for $300,000. It's basically a slim black lambskin wallet with a Chanel name attached. I genuinely don't understand how something so minimal commands that kind of money, but apparently collectors do.
Hermès is where things get truly wild though. Their Faubourg Birkin goes for around $400,000 - it's literally a miniature replica of the Hermès storefront you can carry. Then they collaborated with a Japanese jeweler and created the Ginza Tanaka Birkin with over 2,000 diamonds embedded in it. The price? $1.9 million. I had to read that twice.
Li Bingbing, the Chinese actress, has the most expensive bag version I've seen - a custom Lana Marks Cleopatra clutch with her name in pink gold and pink diamonds, also hitting $400,000. Helen Mirren and Angelina Jolie have carried the same design, but not nearly as fancy.
The wildest part? These aren't even the most expensive bags in theory - they're just the ones people actually paid these prices for at auction. Makes you wonder if there's a limit to how much wealth people will drop on a handbag, or if we'll keep seeing even crazier most expensive bag records broken.
