The smoke over the Strait of Hormuz is just the tip of the iceberg in the U.S.-Iran game
On May 8, a statement issued by the U.S. Central Command dealt another heavy blow to the already fragile prospects for U.S.-Iran negotiations. The direct clash taking place in the Strait of Hormuz is not an isolated military friction, but yet another “bubble” surfacing from deep-seated contradictions between the two countries.
We need to see several key background factors clearly:
First, the location where this interception and counterattack took place is extremely sensitive. The Strait of Hormuz accounts for about one-fifth of global oil transportation; with every exchange of fire here, the market is effectively voting with real money—once the news broke, the sharp V-shaped rebound in oil prices is proof.
Second, the timing is worth pondering. Negotiations are still underway, and this level of military conflict indicates that the parties’ differences on core terms are so large that they cannot be bridged; in many cases, the actions of the military are more real than diplomatic talking points.
Third, we cannot ignore the game among various forces behind the scenes. Within Iran, hardliners are unwilling to make concessions; within the United States as well, there are voices putting pressure on the Biden administration to show toughness on Iran-related issues. In a tug-of-war involving multiple parties, whether a single confrontation can be calmed down depends on whether one side takes the initiative to choose de-escalation—but in the short term, such willingness is not strong.
For traders, the most critical question is: to what extent will this conflict escalate? If it is only the current kind of “controlled confrontation,” the market will gradually absorb the panic. Once there are developments such as ships being seized, casualties, or damage to offshore facilities, the safe-haven premium for gold and oil will quickly rise, and at the same time, risk assets such as U.S. stocks and cryptocurrencies will face greater pressure.
There has never been a simple answer to the Middle East issue, but on this non-farm night, the tightly wound geopolitical string could be pulled at any time by any sudden piece of news.
