Just caught this at Mobile World Congress 2026 - Amazon just announced a massive €33.7 billion investment push into Spain, adding another €18 billion on top of what they committed back in 2024. This is actually pretty significant if you think about the broader European infrastructure play.
So here's what's happening: they're expanding the AWS Europe region down in Aragón with a heavy focus on data centers and cloud infrastructure, plus AI capabilities. The company is talking about adding server manufacturing plants and an AI/ML assembly center that'll create roughly 1,800 jobs in the region. On the broader scale, this investment is expected to contribute €31.7 billion to Spain's GDP through 2035 and support nearly 30,000 full-time jobs across local businesses.
What caught my attention is the sustainability angle they're emphasizing. AWS data centers in Spain have been running on 100% renewable energy since 2022, and they're targeting water positivity by 2030. Plus, they're committing €30 million to community programs focused on education and social impact through 2035.
When you step back, this feels like Amazon making a serious long-term bet on Spain as a strategic hub for European cloud and AI infrastructure. David Zapolsky, their chief global affairs officer, framed it pretty clearly - they're not just building data centers, they're positioning Spain as a key part of Europe's digital capabilities expansion. Given that they've already invested over €20 billion in the country since 2011, this new commitment shows they're doubling down on the market.
The timing is interesting too. As enterprises across Europe race to build out AI infrastructure and cloud capabilities, having Spain become a major hub for AWS could reshape how companies in the region approach their tech infrastructure strategy. Worth keeping an eye on.
