What Happened?
Shares of hotel franchising company Wyndham (NYSE:WH) jumped 7.5% in the morning session after the company’s fourth-quarter results featured an earnings beat that overshadowed a miss on revenue and a weaker-than-expected outlook for the coming year. The hotel franchising company posted adjusted earnings of $0.93 per share, surpassing Wall Street’s expectations. However, revenue of $334 million fell 2.1% year-on-year and slightly missed analyst forecasts. Investors appeared to focus on other positive operational metrics, such as a 7.2% year-on-year increase in Revenue per available room (RevPAR), a key measure of a hotel’s performance. The market’s positive reaction suggests these current strengths are being weighed more heavily than the company’s full-year guidance, which for both earnings and EBITDA fell below consensus estimates.

What Is The Market Telling Us
Wyndham’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 6 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 3 months ago when the stock gained 5.4% on the news that comments from a key Federal Reserve official bolstered hopes for an interest rate cut. New York Federal Reserve President John Williams stated he sees “room for a further adjustment” in the near term, sparking a significant market rally. Following his remarks, the probability of the central bank cutting rates at its December meeting jumped from 39% to over 73%, according to the CME FedWatch tool. This positive sentiment provided relief to markets amid concerns over high valuations, particularly in AI-related stocks.
Wyndham is up 13.8% since the beginning of the year, but at $85.64 per share, it is still trading 23.5% below its 52-week high of $111.91 from February 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Wyndham’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,349.
