Elon Musk's xAI disbands! Renamed SpaceXAI and merged into SpaceX, will the Grok name change after the brand unification?

Elon Musk announces the dissolution of xAI as an independent legal entity and merges all AI product lines into SpaceX, officially rebranding as SpaceXAI operations.

On May 6 (U.S. time), Musk replied to user SawyerMerritt’s post on X, stating: “xAI will be dissolved as an independent company, and all future AI products will appear under SpaceX’s SpaceXAI name.” Musk’s original X post is the sole direct source of this branding change. SpaceX had already announced its acquisition of xAI in February 2026; this time, the independent legal entity is officially removed, and the AI product lines are fully incorporated into SpaceX under the SpaceXAI brand.

Musk’s original statement: xAI is no longer an independent company; AI products now belong to SpaceX

Musk’s full reply: “xAI will be dissolved as an independent company, and all future AI products will appear under SpaceX’s SpaceXAI name.”

This statement clearly separates two matters:

  • Corporate change: xAI as an independent legal entity no longer exists
  • Brand unification: AI products formerly under xAI (including the Grok model) will now appear under the SpaceXAI name

Musk did not specify whether the Grok brand name will also disappear, nor did he detail the staffing, whether the original team will be integrated into existing SpaceX departments, or other operational specifics.

Acquisition of xAI completed in February 2026; this is the brand unification phase

The integration of SpaceX and xAI is not a new event. SpaceX announced its acquisition of xAI on its website as early as February 2026; Musk’s recent message advances “ownership of xAI” to “dissolution of xAI as a legal entity and brand unification as SpaceXAI,” representing the final step in organizational restructuring after the acquisition.

This brand unification immediately impacted external relations—on the same day, May 6, Anthropic announced a compute partnership agreement, initially described as involving “SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center” in the original announcement. On May 7, Xinhua News Agency clarified that the agreement was signed by “SpaceXAI,” and the compute provider for Anthropic is now officially associated with SpaceXAI rather than xAI in terms of law and branding after this change.

Anthropic Colossus 1 contract now under SpaceXAI

The first external validation of this branding change is the contract with Anthropic for compute resources:

  • On May 6, Anthropic announced it was using all compute power from SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center (over 300 MW, 220k NVIDIA GPUs)
  • Xinhua’s May 7 report used the wording: the contract was signed between SpaceXAI and Anthropic
  • Musk’s May 6 message: xAI’s legal entity was dissolved, AI products now belong to SpaceXAI

All three events occurred within the same week, with the timeline being “Musk unifies the brand,” “Anthropic signs contract under the new brand,” and “Colossus 1 compute resources supplied to Anthropic within a month.” According to abmedia’s May 6 report, Anthropic’s acquisition of all SpaceX Colossus 1 compute power and the contract being under the new brand now officially correspond to SpaceXAI.

Follow-up specific events to watch include: whether the Grok brand name will be replaced by SpaceXAI, whether the original xAI website/API will be deactivated, the timeline for SpaceX’s official announcement of the SpaceXAI brand identity, and whether SpaceX’s planned IPO will include SpaceXAI in its valuation.
