The Strait of Hormuz between the U.S. and Iran sees renewed clashes, with Trump stating the ceasefire is still in effect and retaliatory strikes are a "mild punishment."
Mars Finance news: On May 8, the U.S. Central Command said that this Thursday, when a U.S. Navy destroyer was sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, it was attacked by Iran, and the U.S. military responded immediately. According to the Central Command statement, Iran used “multiple missiles, several drones, and several fast boats” in attacks on three U.S. warships, but “U.S. vessels were not hit.” The statement said that U.S. forces “eliminated the incoming threat and targeted those responsible for the attack on U.S. forces, including missile and drone launch sites, command and control centers, as well as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes.” The military command added that the U.S. “does not seek to escalate the situation, but still maintains its deployment and is prepared to protect U.S. forces.”
In the early hours of the 8th local time, a statement by a spokesperson for the Hatam-ol-Anbia Central Command of Iran’s armed forces said that the U.S. military violated the ceasefire and carried out strikes against an oil tanker heading from Iran’s Jask coastal waters to the Strait of Hormuz, as well as another vessel entering the Strait of Hormuz opposite the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. The statement said the U.S. cooperated with some countries in the region to launch airstrikes on civilian areas along the coasts of Iran’s Khamir, Sirik, and Qeshm islands. The statement said that Iran’s armed forces had launched a counterattack against U.S. military vessels east of the Strait of Hormuz and south of the Port of Chabahar, and claimed this resulted in “significant losses.”
A reporter from Fox News said that a senior U.S. official stated that (early morning Beijing time on the 8th) the U.S. carried out military strikes against Qeshm Port and Abbas Port in Iran, but he also added that this was not a restart of war or the termination of the ceasefire agreement. The attack on Iran’s oil ports occurred two days after Iran launched 15 ballistic missiles and cruise missiles at the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. According to ABC News, U.S. President Trump said the retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets were only a “light punishment.” Trump said the ceasefire was ongoing and had already taken effect. He said, “If Iran does not promptly sign the agreement, then in the future, we will deal with them using more intense, more aggressive means.”
The latest escalation has increased tensions in the region, and the U.S. is trying to pull back from a war that has already entered its third month. The Trump administration has been waiting for Iran to respond to its proposals to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war. It is still unclear whether Iran’s leadership will accept the terms of the agreement, although they had previously shown little sign of making concessions on the nuclear program and agreeing to pause uranium enrichment—both of which are the top demands put forward by the United States.
