The Strait of Hormuz between the U.S. and Iran sees renewed clashes, with Trump stating the ceasefire is still in effect and the retaliatory strikes are a "mild punishment."

BlockBeats News: On May 8, the U.S. Central Command stated that this Thursday, a U.S. Navy destroyer was attacked by Iran while navigating the Strait of Hormuz, and the U.S. military responded immediately. According to the Central Command statement, Iran launched an attack involving “multiple missiles, multiple drones, and multiple fast boats” against three U.S. military vessels, but “no U.S. vessels were hit.” The statement said that U.S. forces “eliminated the incoming threat and targeted those responsible for the attack on U.S. forces, including missile and drone launch sites, command and control centers, as well as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes.” The military command added that the U.S. “is not seeking to escalate the situation, but still maintains its deployment and is ready to protect U.S. forces.”

In the early hours of the 8th local time, the spokesperson for Iran’s Hatam Anbia Central Command issued a statement saying that the U.S. violated the ceasefire and carried out strikes against an oil tanker sailing from Iran’s Jask coastal waters toward the Strait of Hormuz, as well as another vessel entering the Strait of Hormuz opposite the port of Fujairah in the UAE. The statement said that the U.S. carried out airstrikes on civilian areas along the coasts of Hamil, Sirik, and Qeshm Island in Iran in cooperation with some regional countries. The statement said that Iran’s armed forces launched a counterattack against U.S. military vessels east of the Strait of Hormuz and south of Chabahar Port, and claimed “significant losses.”

Fox News reporters revealed that a senior U.S. official said that (early morning of the 8th Beijing time) the U.S. launched military strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Port and Abbas Port, but he also added that this was not a re-emergence of war or a termination of the ceasefire agreement. The attack on Iran’s oil ports occurred two days after Iran fired 15 ballistic missiles and cruise missiles at the UAE’s Fujairah Port.

According to ABC News, President Trump of the United States said that the retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets were only a “light punishment.” Trump said that the ceasefire is ongoing and has taken effect. He said, “If Iran does not quickly sign the agreement, then in the future, we will deal with them with more force and more intense means.” The latest escalation of conflict has heightened tensions in the region, while the U.S. is trying to extricate itself from a war that has already entered its third month. The Trump administration has been waiting for Iran to respond to its proposals to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war. It remains unclear whether Iran’s leadership will accept the terms of the agreement, although they have previously shown almost no signs of making concessions on their nuclear program and accepting a pause in uranium enrichment—both of which are the top demands raised by the United States.
