Animoca Chairman Yat Siu: The metaverse as a consumer destination has ended
CryptoWorld News reports that Yat Siu, Chairman of Animoca Brands, said at the 2026 Consensus Conference that the metaverse as a consumer destination has come to an end. It is expected that 100 billion AI agents will become the main users of blockchain.
He noted that the metaverse imagined by the crypto industry during the pandemic was not truly built for humans, but rather a concept proof for agents. Siu believes that the user base of blockchain will mainly consist of autonomous AI agents, not humans. He estimates that in the future, there could be between 50 and 100 billion agents operating on the internet.
Currently, about 700 million to 800 million people worldwide have some form of cryptocurrency, but the number of people actively using blockchain applications is fewer than 70 million, mainly because the technology is still too complex for mainstream consumers. AI agents are not subject to this limitation: they can interact directly through code, do not require traditional banking infrastructure, and can autonomously trade on-chain.
As part of the transition, Animoca announced a $10 million plan to support developers in building AI agent applications.
