Who is really behind Dogecoin? Billy Markus, born in Portland in 1983, is the American programmer who, together with Jackson Palmer, created what would become the first true meme coin in history. What initially seemed like just a joke to mock Bitcoin and Litecoin turned into something completely unexpected.
Before becoming famous in the crypto world, Billy Markus worked as a senior software engineer at IBM. He is not the type to seek the spotlight; in fact, he has always maintained a relatively low profile despite Dogecoin's success. What we know about him mainly comes from his activity on Twitter/X, where he is known by the alias Shibetoshi Nakamoto and has built a truly solid community over the past few years.
What fascinates about Billy Markus is how he managed the project without seeking personal visibility. While many crypto founders love to be in the spotlight, he preferred to let Dogecoin speak for itself. The launch at the end of 2013 with Jackson Palmer was almost accidental, but the way the community embraced the project showed that sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them.
Today, Billy Markus remains an interesting figure in the crypto space, not only for creating Dogecoin but for how he represents a different approach in the industry, where he prefers to work behind the scenes rather than be the public face of the movement.
