I have come across an interesting question that keeps coming up in the Bitcoin community: how many bitcoins does Satoshi Nakamoto actually own? The answer is quite impressive.
Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, is estimated to hold about 1.1 million BTC. This is not just a casual claim – Satoshi was the first miner and mined over 22,000 blocks starting from January 2009. For this work, he received the corresponding block rewards, which totaled over one million bitcoins. At the current price of around $79,900 per bitcoin, that amounts to a fortune of about $88 billion. Interestingly, these coins are not stored on a single address but are spread across approximately 22,000 different addresses. To this day, none of these bitcoins have been moved – aside from a few test transactions.
But Satoshi is not the only major Bitcoin holder. The Winklevoss twins, for example, bought Bitcoin in 2013 worth about $11 million at an average of $10 per coin and now hold an estimated 70,000 BTC. Tim Draper, the well-known venture capitalist, initially bought 40,000 BTC but lost them in the Mt. Gox hack. In 2014, he then purchased 29,656 BTC for about $18.7 million.
Michael Saylor also made headlines when he revealed in 2020 that he personally owns 17,732 BTC. Given his strong conviction in Bitcoin, it’s likely that this amount has grown since then.
Regarding institutional holders: MicroStrategy owns about 628,791 BTC, BlackRock around 738,170 BTC, and Grayscale approximately 180,596 BTC. These figures show how the Bitcoin market has developed – from a purely retail asset to a position that also attracts large institutional players.
It’s also fascinating that Satoshi left the project in 2010 and has been completely absent ever since. No one really knows who is behind the name or whether these 1.1 million bitcoins will ever be moved. This makes Satoshi the biggest Bitcoin holder – and at the same time, the greatest mystery of the cryptocurrency world.
