Just looked at the latest data on most expensive cities in the world, and Switzerland absolutely dominates. Zurich tops the list with a cost of living index of 112.5, meaning it's roughly 12.5% pricier than New York. Geneva and Basel follow closely behind at 111.4 and 110.7 respectively. Honestly, it's wild how the top six most expensive cities are all Swiss—Lausanne, Lugano, and Bern round out the top tier. The index basically uses NYC as the baseline at 100 points, so anything above that is more expensive, anything below is cheaper.
What's interesting is that the US still has a strong presence on the list. New York sits at exactly 100 as the reference point and ranks seventh globally. Then you've got Honolulu at 94.4, San Francisco at 90.7, Seattle at 86, and Boston at 82.7 all making the cut. California dominates with multiple entries—LA and San Diego both at 76.3. The housing market in these tech hubs really drives up the overall cost of living.
Outside Europe and the US, Singapore, Tel Aviv, and Hong Kong are the main Asian representatives on the most expensive cities in the world rankings. Norway also shows up multiple times with Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen, and Stavanger all in the top 25. The data considers housing, food, transportation, utilities, and entertainment when calculating these scores. So if you're thinking about relocating, definitely check where your target city ranks on this index first.
