By the way, while browsing the community, I see many people using the term 'hopium' but not everyone understands what it really means. Today, I’d like to share a little about this term.
You may have come across the word 'hopium' in discussions on Twitter or Discord. This term combines two words: 'hope' and 'opium,' creating a humorous slang. It is used to describe completely baseless hopes, unrealistic expectations.
In the crypto world, what is hopium? It often refers to investors who are blindly ignoring reality. A typical example is when someone still believes a dead coin will go to the 'moon' (skyrocket in value), or expects a failed project to revive. Such hopes are exactly hopium.
I see that hopium is different from 'copium'—another term also used in crypto. While copium refers to self-comfort mechanisms to cope with negative situations, hopium is an unfounded hope, lacking logic. Both reflect the mindset of investors facing difficulties.
This term carries a negative connotation because it is often used to mock those with unrealistic hopes. When someone says 'you need some hopium,' they are suggesting that you need a dose of fake hope to feel better.
Some common ways I see hopium used are: 'Need a little hopium for degenerates,' or 'This is hope for all of us' when Bitcoin price nears 100k. Or even 'BTC 100k #Hopium'—a humorous way to express big expectations.
In general, what is hopium? It is part of the crypto community culture—a way for people to recognize unrealistic hopes and joke about themselves. Understanding this term will help you better grasp conversations within the community.
