DTE ties possible rate hike freeze to data center approvals, Nessel says it’s ‘ransom note’

DTE Energy has filed for a $474.3-million electric rate hike, proposing a 9.7% increase for residential customers, but states it could freeze future rate requests for two years if an Oracle data center in Saline Township becomes operational by 2027 and other regulatory approvals are secured. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel criticized DTE’s conditional offer, calling it a “ransom note” as she appeals the Saline contracts and intervenes in the rate case. Ratepayer advocates also argue that DTE customers already face high energy costs for poor reliability and that the proposed increase and DTE’s return on equity are excessive.
