Recently, I frequently needed to register test accounts using virtual numbers, and I realized that the SMS receiving platforms are really convenient. However, I ran into many pitfalls at the beginning—some platforms couldn't receive texts at all, and others had ridiculous delays. Later, I understood that these decoding platforms are actually services that rent temporary phone numbers to receive verification codes and avoid privacy leaks.

After trying around, the more stable ones are SMS-Activate and 5SIM, with verification codes arriving within about 10 seconds, covering many countries, suitable for cross-border testing. If mainly using domestic number segments, Super Cloud SMS and XiaoNiao receive codes quite well—US numbers take about 10-30 seconds, Chinese numbers are faster, arriving in 5-20 seconds. Getsmscode is cheap, but less popular platforms tend to have delays; it depends on your use case.

The most practical advice is: for purely testing APIs, just pick any platform that supports API integration; if you want stable registration on overseas websites, it's best to prepare several numbers so you can switch immediately if one expires. Some platforms also have a one-click number change feature, which is especially useful—saving time. But don’t use virtual numbers as your long-term primary numbers; privacy and security are not guaranteed, and some websites will directly flag risky numbers and reject them.
