Just checked the long-term PKR story and it's pretty wild how much the rupee has depreciated over the decades. Back in 1947 when Pakistan was founded, 1 USD was only 3.31 PKR. The currency stayed relatively stable through the 50s and 60s, hovering around 4-5 rupees per dollar. Then things started shifting in the early 70s with a sharp devaluation, and it's been a consistent downward spiral ever since. By the late 80s we were already at 20+ PKR per dollar. Fast forward to the 2000s and 2010s, the depreciation accelerated significantly. In 2018 alone it jumped to 139 PKR, then 164 by 2019, and 169 by 2020. The real shock came in 2022-2023 when the rupee collapsed to 240-286 range. Currently sitting around 277 PKR per dollar. What's striking is how the pace of devaluation has picked up over time, especially in recent years. The currency lost more value in the last 5 years than it did in the previous 50 combined. Definitely a sobering look at inflation and economic pressures when you see this kind of historical depreciation pattern.
