I recently came across an interesting historical material about the territories controlled by the Ottoman Empire. The scale of its influence is truly impressive when you understand the details.
In Europe, the Ottoman Empire ruled for an especially long time. Turkey was under its control for 623 years, Bulgaria for 515 years, North Macedonia for 542 years. Greece experienced periods of more or less intense rule: in different regions, it lasted from 370 to 520 years. Serbia endured 419 years, Montenegro 399 years, Bosnia and Herzegovina 415 years. Interestingly, Croatia was only partially conquered and for 147 years. Kosovo was under control for 524 years. Romania shared the empire's fate unevenly: Wallachia, Moldova, and Transylvania experienced its influence for 484, 340, and 337 years respectively. Moldova for 274 years, Hungary for 160-192 years.
In the Caucasus region, the situation was more diverse. Georgia experienced periods of rule totaling 349, 398, and even 1 year in separate periods. Armenia — 41 years, Azerbaijan — 26 years. The Caucasus regions of Russia, including Dagestan and Kabarda, were under the Ottoman Empire's control for about 355 years.
In the Middle East, the influence was even longer-lasting. Iraq — 404 years, Syria, Jordan, Israel, and Lebanon — about 402 years each. Palestine — 401 years. Kuwait — 361-375 years. Saudi Arabia in the regions of Hijaz, Najd, and Al-Ahsa — 393 years. Yemen was under control during two periods, totaling 146 years. Oman was partially controlled, only the Masqat region — just 8 years. Cyprus — 307-343 years.
In Africa, the picture was diverse. Egypt and Sudan — approximately 365-397 years. Libya — 382 years, Algeria — 315 years, Tunisia — 307-330 years. South Sudan — 93 years. Eritrea — 330 years, Djibouti — 329 years, Somalia — 361 years. Morocco and some other territories were under control for much less time.
This chronology shows how widely the Ottoman Empire's power extended over the centuries. Its influence spanned three continents and left a deep mark on the history of many countries.
