Recently, I’ve been doing some testing work, often needing to register for various overseas websites with temporary phone numbers. Buying new SIM cards is too troublesome, and I later discovered the SMS verification platform, which really saves a lot of hassle. Basically, it’s renting virtual numbers to receive SMS verification codes. I’ve encountered quite a few pitfalls during this process, but in the end, I’ve selected five decent platforms to share.
SMS-Activate is used the most, with insanely fast verification code delivery, usually within 10 seconds, and it covers many countries. Super Cloud SMS is more friendly for domestic applications, with US numbers arriving in 5-30 seconds, and Chinese numbers even faster, though sometimes it gets congested during peak times. 5SIM has a clean interface, good API documentation, and can normally receive codes for Google and Twitter during testing. Little Bird SMS is suitable for domestic apps, arriving in 5-15 seconds, offering good value. Getsmscode is cheap, suitable for light use, but may have delays on less popular platforms.
The biggest pitfall with SMS verification platforms is that shared numbers are often previously registered, so sometimes you won’t receive the verification code. My experience is that if it’s just for testing APIs, just pick any platform that supports API access. But if you need stable registration on a specific website, it’s best to prepare multiple numbers and switch immediately if one becomes invalid. Some platforms support one-click number switching, which is especially practical.
Another point is that although SMS verification platforms are convenient, don’t rely on them as your long-term main numbers, as privacy and security are not guaranteed. If you don’t receive the SMS, try switching to a different country’s number or refreshing; sometimes the target service blocks virtual number ranges. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most stably, with low latency and broad coverage. I recommend giving them a try.
