US media: Trump administration considers introducing government regulation for new AI models
Deep Tide TechFlow news: On May 05, the New York Times reported that the U.S. White House is discussing an executive order to establish an artificial intelligence task force, which would bring together technology company executives and government officials to study potential regulatory procedures. One possible plan is to put in place an official government review process for new AI models. Last week, White House officials briefed executives from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI on some of the details of the plan during a meeting. The task force may consider various regulatory proposals, and the review process may be overseen by multiple government agencies to ensure that the models meet safety standards.
This move marks a clear shift in AI policy for the Trump administration. Since returning to the White House last year, Trump has been strongly supportive of AI technology, quickly scrapping the Biden administration’s regulatory process that required AI developers to conduct safety assessments and report models that could have potential military applications. The shift in policy has sparked confusion. Insiders say that during ongoing talks between the White House and technology companies, some business executives believe that too much government regulation would slow down innovation, and companies have not reached consensus on potential regulatory approaches.
