Russia and Ukraine each announce unilateral ceasefires; United Nations welcomes the move

According to reports from foreign media, United Nations Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said local time on the 5th that the United Nations welcomes Russia and Ukraine’s respective announcements of unilateral ceasefires.

Dujarric said that the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, expects the ceasefire to be implemented, and once again calls for a comprehensive, immediate, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire, so as to achieve a just, comprehensive, and sustainable peace in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, international law, and the relevant UN resolutions.

Earlier reports said that on the 4th, the Russian Ministry of Defense released a statement saying that Russian Armed Forces Supreme Commander and President Vladimir Putin decided to implement a Victory Day ceasefire from May 8 to May 9 to commemorate the Soviet people’s victory in the Great Patriotic War.

That evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on social media, announcing that Ukraine has decided to unilaterally cease fire starting from midnight on May 6. (China News Service)
