According to a Reuters report on the 24th, a U.S. official told that the U.S. is considering punishing NATO member countries that did not support U.S. military operations in the U.S.-Israel military strikes against Iran. An internal email from the U.S. Department of Defense outlined relevant options, including suspending the eligibility of Spain as a NATO member.

The report said the U.S. official, speaking anonymously, disclosed that in the email the Department of Defense was “very displeased” with some NATO member countries for being unwilling or refusing to provide the United States with access, basing, and overflight rights during the U.S.-Israel military strikes against Iran, and the email proposed some “punishment options.” In addition to considering the option of suspending Spain’s eligibility as a NATO member, the email also suggested re-examining the U.S. position on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (which the UK calls the Malvinas).

The report said that when Reuters asked a NATO official whether the U.S. has the authority to suspend the eligibility of NATO allies, the official said that the NATO treaty does not include any provisions related to suspending the eligibility of member states. (Xinhua News Agency)
