Cisco Systems Inc. has unveiled a prototype of its Universal Quantum Switch, aiming to address the scalability challenge in quantum computing by enabling interoperability between quantum systems from various vendors. This switch routes quantum information while preserving its quantum state, operating at room temperature over telecom fiber, and includes a patented conversion system to translate between different quantum encoding modalities. Although not yet a commercial product, it represents a significant step towards creating a universal networking layer for quantum applications, supporting partnerships with companies like IBM and Atom Computing.
