Bank of Italy Official Urges EU to Explore Tokenized SEPA Payments

Bank of Italy Deputy Governor Chiara Scotti said the EU should explore a tokenized extension of SEPA, a payments framework that handled 116 trillion euros in non-cash transactions in the first half of 2025. Scotti said the digital euro is the area where analytical work is most advanced. Scotti added that the broader monetary implications of stablecoins and tokenized deposits are less clear.
