The Supreme Court issues several provisions on the applicable time validity of maritime law

The Supreme People’s Court issued several provisions on April 28 regarding the applicable time validity of maritime law, which will come into effect on May 1, 2026. The provisions adhere to the principle of “the law does not apply retroactively,” clarify the general rules for the transition between the old and new maritime laws, and focus on five types of special situations that are prone to disputes in maritime trial practice, including ship mortgage transfer, maritime insurance contracts, electronic transportation records, and others, providing clear guidance for maritime judicial practice.
