I just saw the ranking of the poorest countries in the world in 2025, and it's really striking. South Sudan is at the top with only $251 GDP per capita, followed by Yemen at $417 and Burundi at $490. It's crazy when you think about it.

Looking at the full list, most of the countries in the top 20 are African. the DRC, Niger, Somalia, Nigeria... all with GDP per capita under $1,000. West Africa and Central Africa are particularly affected. Some Asian countries like Myanmar, Nepal, and Bangladesh also appear among the poorest.

What’s interesting is seeing how these figures reflect economic crises, conflicts, and political instability. South Sudan, for example, has just come out of a civil war. Yemen is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis. These data remind us that global economic inequalities are huge and that some regions face truly structural challenges.
