President of Colombia Encourages the Caribbean to Become a Bitcoin Mining Hub
President Gustavo Petro stated that the Caribbean region in Colombia has the potential to become a center for Bitcoin mining development. This statement comes amid increasing mining investments in Latin America, especially in countries like Paraguay and Venezuela, which have abundant clean energy sources.
Petro considers the availability of renewable energy as a key factor attracting Bitcoin mining investments to the region. He mentioned that the Colombian Caribbean area also has similar potential to be developed as a clean energy-based crypto industry hub.
However, Petro warned that mining activities relying on fossil fuels pose a risk of worsening global warming. He emphasized the importance of a sustainable approach in developing this industry, prioritizing the use of environmentally friendly energy.
Additionally, the government is also encouraging the involvement of local communities, including the Wayúu indigenous people, in planned mining projects. Petro affirmed that these communities need to be involved as co-owners so that economic benefits can be felt directly.
