An interesting fact that is often overlooked is that when talking about the Islamic world, the focus is mainly on the Middle East. In reality, the picture is quite different. It turns out that most Muslims do not live there at all, but in South and Southeast Asia. The scale is simply astonishing.
Take Indonesia — there are 242 million Muslims living there, more than all the Middle Eastern countries combined. It’s a whole universe of believers in one country. Then comes Pakistan with 235 million, India with 213 million. Even Bangladesh ranks among the top four Islamic countries by Muslim population — 150 million people.
If you look at the full list of the largest Muslim centers, the picture becomes even more interesting. Nigeria, Egypt, Iran, Turkey — all are significant, but they pale compared to Asian giants. Uzbekistan, Malaysia, China (yes, there are also 25 million Muslims there) — each of these countries is important in the global Islamic geography.
Data from Pew Research Center for 2025 show a clear trend — the center of gravity of the Islamic world is shifting eastward. This influences politics, economics, and culture. When analyzing global processes, it’s important to remember this geography. Asian Islamic countries are not just the majority in terms of numbers; they are also experiencing growing economic influence. It’s worth keeping an eye on developments in these regions, especially if you’re interested in geopolitics and global trends.
