Petro Proposes Caribbean Bitcoin Mining Hubs Using Surplus Renewable Energy

Colombian President Gustavo Petro proposed using surplus renewable energy to turn Caribbean coastal cities into Bitcoin mining hubs, while about 75% of Colombia’s electricity comes from renewable sources. Petro said the plan could include shared ownership for the Wayuu community. Petro said Colombia wants to follow Paraguay’s model as some U.S. miners shift toward AI computing.
